Belize 20th - 26th July 2006

The morning of the 20th we aimed to catch the 6.30am bus to the boarder of Belize. The taxi didn't turn up and we ended up on the 8.20am instead. As a result we didn't get to Caye Caulker until 6pm-ish...... and we found the Islands hotels had shut up for the night ! Eventually, we found a room to stay in. Added to this it was chucking it down with rain - not the best start to the trip!!

On the beach first thing the next morning........

But the next morning was brighter, without rain and we had a great breakfast! Colourful houses were all over the place ......

However, we still decided to cut short the trip to the island, headed back to the main land and on to San Ignacio. San Ignacio itself wasn't too exciting but the tours from there and the surrounding countryside was awesome. One of the highlights of the trip was the tour to Actun Tunichil Muknal.

A 45 minute hike through the jungle, crossing 3 rivers, lead us to the cave entrance.

We had to wear nice hats and lights ..... We only had to travel 500 meters into the cave system but it took the best part of an hour and a half to do it. There was lots of swimming and chest high wading !

... and when we eventually got to the main cave we had to take off our shoes and walk in socks. The floor of the cave was littered with jars and body parts. There were a number of complete skeletons - sacrifices - this one was a teenage girl. Close by was a teenage boy with all four limbs broken, probably so he didn't try and get away!
